Alan Wood Plumbing and Heating Park Stakes (Group 2) – 14:25, 16th September 2017

Saturday sees a quality Group 2 race commence, and this seven furlong contest sees over £50,000 up for grabs to the winner, making it a competitive race – and surprisingly, there’s some decent value to be found, as well.

First, let’s head back a year and look at the race last year; it was won by Breton Rock, an underdog to say the least, and a horse that was not backed heavily, at all; many thought his success would be a one-off, but he went to cause more shockwaves through the industry by crossing the line first in Goodwood’s “Lenox Stakes”, at a price of 50/1.

We mention this, because Doncaster is a fantastic course for less-well-known, and – somewhat ‘underdog-like’ – horses to make their mark, and one of our favourite picks looks to be Alice Springs, a Group 1 winner, who’s won three times in her career.

Another interesting pick looks to be Lancaster Bomber, who finally has the chance to live up to his potential; most of his most recent horse races have been spent chasing up Churchill, and Barney Roy, and while he’s looked set to be first to cross the line, he has, in fact, acted more as a pacemaker than anything else – so we may see him enter this race with something to prove.

Beat The Bank is yet another pick that could be interesting, and he’s only been beaten once in five career starts; his losing race saw him place 10th at Ascott. He should comfortably make the top three, and given his previous success in Group 3 races, we’d be surprised if he didn’t end up being one of the main contenders for this race, with bookies potentially pricing him up as favourite.

Another thing that’s interesting to point out, is the John Gosden horses entered into the race; one of our favourites from this established owner is Persuasive, and she made the headlines first in 2016, when she went unbeaten in her first five career races; she did see a loss, however, to Alice Springs, in the Matron Stakes – so she could be a solid each-way bet.

Overall, there could be some good value, but at the end of the day it may come down to a two-horse race, between Beat The Bank and Alice Springs.
