The Premier League title race appears to be going down to the wire with Manchester City and Liverpool head and shoulders above the rest. The two teams have been neck and neck all season with either side fighting for the title.
There are a lot of factors that could affect both City and Liverpool in terms of fixtures remaining and the Champions League. Neither side can afford to slip up because it could potentially cost them the title.
Liverpool vs Southampton
With City not playing this weekend in the Premier League due to the FA Cup, Liverpool had the chance to go back to the top of the table which they did but in a nervy fashion. Liverpool needed late goals once again to save them from falling further behind City. Liverpool went behind early on in the game thanks to Southampton’s Shane Long. But a Naby Keita goal late in the first half made it 1-1. The game remained a stalemate until the last 10 minutes when goals from Jordan Henderson and Mo Salah secures a 3-1 win which took them ahead of City by 2 points but City still have one game in hand.
Liverpool have been stubborn in giving up the title after they scored late goals against Fulham and Spurs. It appears that they need to do whatever it takes as City are not giving up easily as well and are still in contention for a quadruple this season. But will all these potential titles and fixtures come into play?
Title Race Potential
The title race has been one of the closest ones ever in the history of the Premier League. Liverpool have been unbeaten since they lost to their title rivals on January 3rd. Therefore even if the Reds win every one of the remaining seven games they will reach a total of 97 points and would still lose the title. They will be hoping that their other Manchester rivals can do them a favour and beat City when they meet in two weeks time. If the Cityzens won their remaining eight games they could reach a total of 98 points which would mean that they retain the title. Since beating Liverpool they have amassed a total of 24 points from a possible 27 which is why they are in the driving position. Both teams look likely to suffer from something that has never happened before and that’s a side losing the title after reach 90 points or more.
Key Areas For Either Side
Both sides are still in the Champions League and with European football being so demanding in terms of injuries and constant fixtures they both need to remain consistent and make the right rotation in order to avoid injuries to key players. They both also need to show a lot of consistency and character if they wish to achieve the heights that they’ve set for themselves this season. Good planning and a will to win will be the deciding factors in the title race because both sides can’t afford a slip up.
The title race seems almost certain to go down to the final day. This is why the Premier League is the most popular league in the world. The intensity and the thrill it brings to its fans with close title races and fights for top for is what it’s all about.
