On Sunday afternoon the Merseyside Derby took place but it wasn’t quite what we would all have expected.
Everton were delighted to have held Liverpool to a scoreless draw which meant Manchester City now have the advantage in the Premier League title race. Liverpool were left frustrated as their hopes of winning the title are slimmer as City went above them.
Are Liverpool Slipping Up Again?
Liverpool have recently dipped in form and are in danger of losing out on the league title once again. Seems harsh to judge them as they are setting quite high standards but that’s the issue, they’ve set such high standards that not winning puts a lot of pressure on them. On Sunday evening Liverpool could only manage a draw against Everton, but the game itself despite ending goalless, was an entertaining one. The rivalry between the two teams took centre stage and had a lot to offer.
Liverpool were to rue their missed chances and the only positive that could be taken from the game that they had another strong defensive performance. Liverpool recorded their 5th clean sheet in a row in all competitions on Sunday and are only the 11th team in top-flight history to reach 740 points after just 29 games. This all means nothing compared to the fact that they are now second in the table. If we look back at the start of the year Liverpool were seven points clear of City, but now find themselves one point behind with just nine games left to play.
Salah Blanks Again
The man known as the Egyptian King has had a good season thus far, he already has 17 Premier League goals but he is not the Salah we’ve come to know and love in the two seasons. On Sunday his recent dip in form cost Liverpool as he missed some vital opportunities which many believe a player of his capabilities should’ve put away. Salah has failed to score which means that he has now only one goal in his last six games. Many described Salah as sloppy which is not wrong, based on what we’ve seen of late. If Liverpool are to have any hope of winning the league they need their top goal scorer to find form again.
Liverpool Not The Same Team
Liverpool have struggled to be the team they were at the start of season where we all thought they’d go invincible this season. They’ve been a shadow of what they were and especially in midfield and attack. Players have had a lack of composure, Everton put pressure on them early into the game and were playing at a fast pace which Liverpool couldn’t cope with. Players such as Robertson, Fabinho, Salah were sending missed placed passes and as the game progressed they became complacent. During the second half their passing dropped to a low 70% which is usually at 85%.
Many are unsure whether Liverpool will be able to win the title. They now have to hope that City drop points and their fate is out of their hands. They could be facing a repeat of the famous slip that cost them the league a few years ago only now they’re slipping up as a team.
