Can Huddersfield Get The One Point they Need To Survive?

Huddersfield Town now head into their two final games of the season knowing that a point is all they need to retain their Premier League status for another season.

David Wagner’s side did superbly to leave the Etihad with a draw against Manchester City at the weekend, and a repeat performance against either Chelsea or Arsenal would see them send Swansea plummeting to the Championship, but can The Terriers pull it off?

What makes it hard for Huddersfield and David Wagner is that both Chelsea and Arsenal have something to play for in effect. The former are in with a chance of finishing in the top four, against the odds, while Arsenal travel to Huddersfield to play what will be Arsene Wenger’s last game in charge of the club. So, the task which David Wagner and his players face is huge, but it’s one they can certainly deal with.

They will rightly be buoyed by their display against champions Manchester City, in which they more than held their own against Pep Guardiola’s men, and even had more shots than them during the game. This was obviously a system that had been worked on, with every player knowing their role, while displaying the right amount of discipline throughout. Knowing that just a solitary point is enough will certainly give the players all the motivation they need to finish the job.

Swansea will be hoping that both Chelsea and Arsenal record victories over The Terriers, as they slipped to what could be a pivotal defeat at home to Southampton last night. Swansea, for the most part, were the better side, but once again they lacked that cutting edge in the final third. Manolo Gabbiadini’s goal was enough to secure a crucial three points for The Saints, as he reacted quickest to a scramble in the box following a corner. That goal sees Southampton all but safe, barring a heavy defeat at the hands of Manchester City on the final day.

The Swans will certainly be feeling that their time in the top flight is set to come to an end, especially as they have struggled for the last couple of seasons now. Players have left the club, but have not been replaced, and they seem to have been sleepwalking into a perilous position. While Carlos Carvalhal rejuvenated them temporarily, it seems their lack of creativity and lack of a goal scorer, is going to cost them their Premier League status. They’ve scored 27 league goals in this campaign, the same as Huddersfield, and this is nowhere near good enough.

The final day of the season should be very interesting if Huddersfield is still looking for a point to ensure safety. While Swansea have been poor of late, you would expect them to beat already-relegated Stoke at home, which will, in turn, increase the pressure on The Terriers. Either way, there is set to be further heartbreak, as only one of Huddersfield and Southampton will survive.
