Real Madrid Retain The Super Cup

Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid were victorious in the UEFA Super Cup against Manchester United after goals from Casemiro and Isco, saw them run out 2-1 winners in Macedonia. Many were looking forward to seeing how United faired against the European champions with some claiming that the recruitment of the likes of Lindelof, Matic and Lukaku would see Mourinho’s men take a step closer to the Manchester United of old.

Real Madrid certainly looked a class above in Skopje, dominating the odds of possession and making it look far too easy. Even though United only finished 6th in the Premier League last season, a lot of money has been poured into recruitment once again and this has duly raised hopes that they could be serious contenders for the Premier League title this season. On this showing they still have a lot of work to do. Yes, they were playing Real Madrid, arguably the best team on the planet but you would have expected a bit more from United on the night.

Real Madrid dominated from the off with Luka Modric in imperious form, pulling the strings in midfield. Casemiro opened the scoring after he slid in a half volley.

The Brazilian in actual fact had hit the woodwork just a bit earlier. Isco then made it 2-0 to Real, after a nice interchange with Gareth Bale allowed him to slot home from eight yards. New United signing, Romelu Lukaku, clawed one back for the Europa League winners and Marcus Rashford went close to levelling the tie, but it wasn’t meant to be.

United throughout the night struggled to cope with the control Real Madrid had, largely through Luka Modric, especially in the first half. Zidane’s men had a 63% share of the possession over the course of 90 minutes and they were passing the ball around effortlessly, dictating the tempo of the game in the process.

One player who did stand out for Manchester United was new arrival Nemanja Matic. He shielded the back four well and probably stopped Real widening the margin of victory. The big Serb didn’t just impress defensively though, he made more passes and had more touches than anyone else in a United shirt. He also set up a couple of goal scoring chances and it was his rasping shot which led to Lukaku’s goal.

All in all, it probably was a night to forget for United, who were given the run around by Real. Luka Modric made things look far too easy and it was his control in midfield that allowed Zidane’s men to flourish. There were encouraging signs though for Jose Mourinho. Matic put a good shift in to say he’s only been at the club for a couple of weeks and Lukaku bagged a goal and that will give him confidence heading into their Premier League opener with West Ham on Sunday. Zinedine Zidane will have been the happier though as his men went out there and really showed everyone why they’re the best team in the world.
