On Sunday night the final four of the NCAA tournament had been set with some major upsets occurring. Duke who were the top seed coming into the tournament were unable to reach even the final four after they were knocked out by Michigan State.
Another upset on the night was when Auburn defied all odds by defeating Kentucky in over time. With star player Zion Williamson, Duke were the favourites to go all the way but they went into one close game too many as they couldn’t come out on top.
Duke Not So Invincible After All
After two incredibly close games Duke showed signs that they could be beaten and it finally happened after a disappointing night against Michigan. Duke had played with fire twice before coming into the game against UCF and Virginia Tech. They failed to close out games twice and it nearly cost them in the second round and the Sweet 16. The No.2 seed Michigan State pulled off the impossible after beating Duke 68-67 in a game that went down to the wire. They beat Duke at the Capital One Arena and in doing so secured their spot in the final four.
Spartans In The Final Four
One of Blue Devils starlet’s RJ Barrett had a huge opportunity to tie the game when he was given two free throws with just six seconds remaining. But he wasn’t clutch enough and only managed to score 1 of 2 and Duke failed to regain possession. Earlier Kenny Goins hit a clutch three which all but sealed the game. This means that the Spartans will make their first appearance in the final four since 2015 while Duke suffered another loss in the final eight for the second straight year. With Williamson and Barrett, the biggest attractions they were outshined by Winston who scored 20 points and got 10 assists. Not even Zion’s 24 points and 14 rebounds was enough to help the Blue Devils.
Underrated Auburn Causes Upset
Auburn were rated as the Number 5 seeds and weren’t expected to make it far in the tournament. But they turned heads after an impressive overtime victory against the number 2 seeds Kentucky. The game went into overtime where Auburn came out on top, winning the game 77-71. Auburn used impressive three point shooting and fast breaks to their advantage which secured them the victory. They came into the game on a low as their star player Chuma Okele tore his ACL in the game against North Carolina. Although Jared Harper and Bryce Brown filled in for their teammate, scoring 26 and 24 points respectively for the Tigers. This will be Auburn’s first appearance in the final four in their history and will now play South Regional winners Virginia in Minneapolis.
Who Will Be Tournament Winners
Auburn have made a name for themselves and have ensured that they will no longer be overlooked. They might still be the underdogs in the tournament but they’re showing heart and determination which could take them all the way. Michigan State will definitely be feared going into the final four as they knocked off the number one seed in the Blue Devils. It’s hard not to see them as the team that will win the tournament.
