Extraordinary Westbrook sets new NBA triple-double record

Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russel Westbrook broke the consecutive triple-double record held by the legendary Wilt Chamberlain which was set in 1968. He now finds himself in Hall of Fame territory which is deserved.

For a guard he is everywhere on the court and any team in the NBA would be lucky to have him. Triple doubles don’t come easy to most players in general but Westbrook has achieved the feat of getting a triple-double most games that he plays in.

Westbrook vs Blazers

On Monday night Westbrook entered the record books once again. He notched up his 10th straight triple double in a 120-11 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. Westbrook had great numbers during the game which has recently become a norm, he had 21 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. The ten triple doubles have also helped the Thunder achieve 9 wins in 10 games. The game was a fascinating one to watch because Westbrook wasn’t the only player on the Thunder team to notch up a triple-double. Paul George who has been in arguably the best form of his career dropped 47 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in the game as well.

Playoffs

OKC now sit third in the Western Conference and have a 36-19 record. This run has improved their hopes of a playoff spot immensely. Westbrook was quite humble about his achievement and has this to say; “I just go play every game the right way, it’s what I do. Go out and compete every night and leave it on the floor, and whatever happens, happens. I’m very, very blessed to be able to go out and play, and I don’t take it for granted.”

Triple-Double Legend

Over the course of the 10 games Westbrook averaged an incredible 19.7 points, 12.3 rebounds and 13.8 assists. This is unheard of for most guards which clearly indicates that he is something special in that position. Westbrook has made triple doubles a norm and in doing so he sits third on the all-time triple-doubles list. He currently has 127 triple doubles, only Magic Johnson with 138 and Oscar Robertson with 181 has more.

Records

He continues to make a triple double look like light work, he already set a record being the only person in NBA history to achieve a triple double in consecutive seasons. He also set the single-season record for most triple doubles in a season with 42 during the 2016-17 season. Westbrook has been named an All-Star for the eighth time this season and that’s due to the fact that he already has 23 triple-doubles this year.

More To Come

There no doubt in the ability of Westbrook to go on and break more and more records. He is one of the most versatile guards ever to grace the game and is a lethal weapon on the court. He will surely go on to continue his triple-double record and if not he will continue to make triple-doubles look easy until he retires.
